The Moon 461 power amplifier is designed to amplify music with absolute precision, high current, and exceptional control. As the most powerful model in the Compass collection, it is intended for demanding acoustic systems and high-performance audio systems. Inspired by the long-standing traditions of MOON amplifier design, the 461 amplifier is oriented towards transparency, dynamic characteristics, and low distortion levels. The goal is simple: to maintain the integrity of the incoming signal and to transmit music with clarity, precision, and expressiveness.
The Moon 461 pairs perfectly with the Moon 491 network player/preamplifier. Together, they form the most powerful system in the Compass collection. However, the 461 amplifier can also easily be combined with a wide range of preamplifiers and audio sources. Housed in a compact chassis, the powerful amplifier platform of the 461 model ensures clear channel separation, high output power, and impressive stability in complex conditions. As a result, the 461 model offers both refined sound quality and power reserves without compromises.
At the heart of the 461 amplifier lies the MOON Distortion Cancelling Amplification (MDCA) technology. This patented class AB design is the latest achievement of MOON's over forty-year research and development efforts in amplifier technology.
Unlike conventional feedback amplifiers, MDCA operates outside the main signal path. It compares the input signal with the amplified output signal in real-time. It then identifies noise and minute nonlinear errors before providing an accurate corrective signal directly to the output stage. Because this process occurs outside the main signal path, distortions are reduced more effectively. Additionally, output impedance is reduced, and damping factor is improved. The result is greater clarity, better control, reduced noise, and a more natural sound quality of the music.
The Moon 461 model utilizes two proprietary MOON Hybrid Power (MHP) power supply modules, each with its dedicated power source. This dual-channel monophonic approach ensures stable power supply and superior channel isolation. The MHP combines advanced energy conversion technologies with extremely low noise levels. A high-performance power factor correction stage converts alternating current into stable high-voltage direct current. Then, a high-frequency resonant LLC converter provides efficient energy transmission with reduced losses and electromagnetic emissions.
Furthermore, the system operates well beyond the audio frequency range, avoiding interference with amplifier's sensitive circuits. The adjustable linear output stage ensures low noise levels, low output impedance, and superior transient response. As a result, superior voltage stability, reduced ripple and electromagnetic interference, and stable operation under various loads and network conditions are achieved.
The Moon 461 amplifier model features a sleek design typical of the Compass collection. It boasts a carefully crafted black chassis, sandblasted aluminum side panels, and refined architectural lines. The amplifier is available with side panels of black or silver aluminum, combining visual elegance with practical design. Its proportions contribute to efficient cooling and allow for easy placement in racks, cabinets, or specially equipped listening rooms. Powerful, precise, and beautifully designed, the Moon 461 provides the control, transparency, and musical power expected from a modern high-class power amplifier.
The Moon 461 features a low-noise dual-channel monophonic architecture, with each channel having its 800W power supply. This ensures clear channel separation, precise sound imaging, and stable spatial characteristics. The amplifier can also easily adapt to different system configurations. By switching a toggle, the user can choose one of three operating modes.
