A Reimagined Beginning
The "DC" in D8000 DC stands for "Da Capo," which symbolizes a return to the beginning—a complete reconstruction of our flagship headphones with a fresh, innovative approach. Seven years have passed since the original D8000 made its debut. Leveraging new manufacturing technologies and the expertise we've developed over this time, final has meticulously redesigned the entire D8000 system from the ground up.
AFDS: Air Film Damping System
The Air Film Damping System (AFDS) planar magnetic driver has been completely overhauled to deliver superior transient response and lower distortion, enhancing both the tonal quality and sound resolution. To unlock the full potential of this newly designed driver, we have re-engineered the acoustic chamber within the housing and reshaped the ear pads for optimal sound performance. With AFDS (Air Film Damping System), the planar magnetic model was reinvented. Leaving the merits of the planar magnetic model - a lightweight vibration system and superior reproduction of high frequencies - as is, the employment of AFDS expands the reproduction frequency band with a bass bias, and makes the use of breatheable earpads possible. Compared to the conventional planar magnetic model, with which tightly sealed earpads had to be used to supplement bass frequencies, the natural, open sound achieved is of a quality worthy of being termed a reinvention.
Design Features
The ear pads and headband are made from the same high-quality Washi paper material used in the D8000 Pro Limited Edition, ensuring both durability and comfort. In addition to the sound improvements, we've reduced the weight of the D8000 DC by 120 grams and adjusted the headband's clamping force to provide the most comfortable, stress-free listening experience we have ever offered. The D8000 DC Pro comes in an elegant matte-silver. This version has been refined to handle higher playback volumes, significantly minimizing the rattling issues found in the original D8000.
A machined aluminum magnesium alloy housing
To establish AFDS, an extremely high level of precision compared to typical driver units is necessary. Because of this, the machined aluminum magnesium alloy housing has been machined with great precision. Black sports a leathercoat finish such as that used for expensive cameras. Silver has been imparted with an Alumite anodized aluminum finish.
Manufactured at our own factory, this model espouses precision
The D8000 series is manufactured at our head office in Kawasaki.Together with the precision of individual parts, the precision involved in the assembly process depends on the precision of the tools known as jigs that assist in the assembly process. So as to be able to fine-tune even the slightest of irregularities in jig precision during the assembly process, we design and manufacture production jigs and measurement jigs ourselves.
We developed manufacturing apparatus such as a diaphragm formation machine and a diaphragm tension meter in-house, specifically for the D8000 series. To create truly good products, it is necessary to get to the core of the manufacturing process of parts close to the raw material. What is good about "made in Japan" is that when doing so, you can gain the cooperation of those manufacturers close to the material. By contolling everything together, from sourcing the raw materials through to the assembly of the product, we have achieved high-quality products.
Distinctive Finishes and Sound Signatures
The D8000 DC Pro comes in a refined matte-silver. Both The D8000 DC and D8000 DC Pro models share the same advanced driver but differ in their acoustic chamber designs, delivering unique sound signatures that cater to various listening preferences.
Differences in sound quality between the D8000 and D8000 Pro Edition
The D8000 Pro Edition is a new product that leaves the delicate sound quality of the D8000 intact and has undergone retuning of driver units which adopt the Air Film Damping System (AFDS) in accordance with actual use for professional sound recordings upon the request of recording engineers who wish to listen at louder sound volumes than ordinary consumers.
As a result of the new tuning, which takes into consideration the human auditory characteristic by which low frequency range becomes easier to hear as volume increases, the D8000 Pro Edition provides sound quality perceived to be of higher clarity when listening to rock, pops and other selections featuring a narrow dynamic range in contrast to the D8000, which is suitable particularly for classical music and other selections that feature a wide dynamic range. The following figure shows the difference in sound quality tendencies between the D8000 and the D8000 Pro Edition.
