Description

Cayin N6iii Digital Audio Player with Audio Motherboard E203. The N6iii features a 4.97-inch display, noticeably larger than the 4.2-inch screen on the N6ii but well within the one-handed operation limit. To avoid getting bulkier, Cayin eliminated any structural extension around the chassis, giving the front an all-screen appearance. To minimize the width of the DAP, the playback control buttons, and volume knob are tucked beneath the screen. The curved sides improve grip, ensuring that even with a slightly larger screen, the device remains comfortable to hold. As a result, the N6iii delivers a superior visual and control experience, while its size increase is minimal. In today’s era of ever-larger DAPs, the N6iii retains excellent portability.

Key Features:

  • Fully Modular DAP Inherits Cayin N6ii;
  • Built with Qualcomm Snapdragon 665;
  • User replaceable E203 audio motherboard;

One of the N6iii’s most significant design breakthroughs is the development of a new quick-release locking mechanism to swap the audio motherboards swiftly. Fortunately, we have dealt with a similar problem when we develop C9ii and we can modify the “tool-free” quick-release latch into a three-point locking mechanism with a self-locking push-button system, completely doing away with the need for screws. You can watch the video below to see how incredibly easy it is to switch audio motherboards on the N6iii.

The N6iii also has a unique antenna design. In earlier models like the N6ii, the antenna was integrated into the upper back section of the device, with relatively low signal gain to avoid interference. In more recent models (N8ii, N7, N30LE), Cayin adopted an external ring antenna placed on the top of the device, providing high gain and interference-free audio circuitry for a better online streaming experience. For the N6iii, due to strict size limitations, the antenna has been moved to a semi-exposed area, right beneath the top panel of the N6iii DAP. While this placement results in a slightly lower gain than the external antenna design used in N7.N8ii and N30LE, it offers a significant improvement over the previous N6ii without increasing the length of the DAP. It offers excellent streaming performance with minimal interference with analog audio processing.

The N6III is equipped with a 5" screen with FullHD resolution of 1080×1920 pixels, significantly larger than the 4.2" screen on the N6II, but still ensures convenient one-handed use. In addition, to avoid being more cumbersome, the company has removed all structural extensions around the frame.

The E203 Audio Motherboards

Cayin Audio's N6III continues with E203. The latest DAC/amp module is built around ESS Technology's ES9039Pro and a Class A discrete transistor output stage with Hyper mode, to yield some of the most complete portable amplification known to modern Head-Fi. Nothing else this side of $2,000 will drive a Subtonic Audio Storm and Nightjar Acoustics Duality without compromise.

ESS DACs saw arguably the most popular modules with the preceding N6II. In the time since, N6III has been able to take inspiration from C9II to invent a whole new analog circuit utilising this generation's 30 per cent increased board space, designing a great platform to debut the ES9039Pro in a Cayin DAP.

Hyper modern, this ESS flagship's Hyperstream IV technology is good to go for the next decade. ES9039Pro's patented pulse-width modulation technology is already a one-up on standard delta-sigma modulation, now pushing nigh inaudible high-order distortion levels post-conversion further down.

The Gen2 Audio Motherboard is not backward compatible with the first generation N6ii Audio Motherboards. To accommodate the audio technologies we have mastered in the past 5 years, we need to use a larger PCB in the new generation Audio Motherboard. This is like playing a zero-sum game: when we increase the PCB, we need to make the DAP bigger, and then it becomes less portable. After a lengthy industrial design process, we finalized the N6iii physical design with the following attributes:

  • N6iii over dimension (126mm x 77.8mm x 23mm): 26.8% increased from N6ii;
  • N6iii battery (9000mAH @3.8V): 52.5% increased from N6ii;
  • N6iii Audio Motherboard PCB: ~30.9% increased from N6ii (based on E203).

First up is the N6iii’s debut audio motherboard, the E203. We can summarize the standout features with a few key terms:

  • This eight-channel DAC bring five new digital filters – many with low in-band ripple – to the party for new flavours of sonic reproduction.;
  • High-precision Cascade Volume Control;
  • Parallel Amplifier.

ES9039Pro DAC chip

ES9039Pros pack enough computational horsepower to run their 8x oversampling process in just two passes thus minimising rounding errors – an upgrade on other attempts that use a concatenation of three stacked 2x oversampling passes which compound errors. Perfectly exploiting the dynamic range and distortion headroom these futuristic ESS DACs provide is Cayin's implementation. An eight-channel current-to-voltage I/V conversion stage is built in to preserve the full information from N6III/E203's digital decode.

This overbuilt stage is befitting of ESS chips that output in current for best distortion performance, and indeed more expensive players. By treating each of the eight channel current outputs separately before stereo summing, N6III/E203 yields a small-signal stage that is transparent and, most importantly, accurate.

The power supply and peripheral circuitry allow DAC chip to be completely separate and symmetrical, ensuring extremely stable DAC performance. This design ensures precise phase alignment for all DACs. While the synchronized clock technology has low noise and minimizes distortion at the parallel DAC output, thereby significantly improving sound density and overall audio performance.

High precision Cascade volume control

The Cayin N6III is also equipped with a highly precise volume control system using 4 Nisshinbo passive volume chips (NJU72315). This ensures that the left and right channels maintain consistent signal levels across the entire volume range, delivering clearer, purer sound with improved transparency. The Nisshinbo NJU volume chip is a passive, very compact device. Its low power consumption and low heat generation make it an ideal solution for DAP deployments.

Amplifier

Results spoke for themselves for C9II, and that's now trickled down into N6III/E203. This module likewise overbuilds its differential, balanced small-signal stage – where E203's sound signature is defined – packing in the venerable Texas Instruments OPA1612 that has been respected in line-stages for over a decade. How E203 overcomes its internal lag circuit capacitance is audible, resulting in an extended high-frequency performance that enables excellent phase response in the human hearing range for realistic dynamics.

Indeed, Cayin's big output devices can be operated in Class AB or an optimal Class A, for sonic tweaking with your favourite earphones and headphones. Differentiating itself from its peers built with op-amps yet with inordinate amounts of gain and negative feedback, E203's linearity remains excellent already before correction is applied, owing to its high operating voltages and bias.

Those ensure individual transistors are working in optimum condition. Distortion and noise are kept low, without resorting to the excessive use of negative feedback. Cayin designed a true-balanced differential amplifier to further improve N6III/E203's linearity, and you can count on common-mode rejection at its best whenever you plug in via 4.4mm preserving its resolution.
