Eight SSL-designed microphone/line inputs
The SSL 18 features eight high-performance microphone preamps designed by SSL, with the ability to switch between microphone/line configurations. The preamps ensure recording with extremely low noise levels and a huge dynamic range, ensuring you can capture every sound detail with stunning accuracy.
The two-stage scheme provides ultra-low distortion while preserving the natural sound of the source – or switch them to the 4K mode to add genuine analog saturation and the iconic sound of the 4000 series to vocals, drums, and more. Inputs 1 and 2 on the front panel also provide instrument/Hi-Z inputs for recording Di'd guitars and vintage synthesizers/drum machines.
10 line outputs
The SSL 18 features ten balanced line outputs located on the rear panel. Outputs 1 and 2, as well as 3 and 4, can be adjusted from +9 to +24 dBu for optimal signal integrity and maximum power reserve. This ensures seamless compatibility with a wide range of studio monitors and vintage low-frequency equipment. Outputs 3 through 10 operate at +24 dBu, ideal for integrating professional outboard gear. For producers, all outputs are connected to a DC supply and are capable of transmitting control voltage to synthesizers and modular setups.
Vintage analog 4K resolution
SSL 4000 series consoles (often referred to as "4K") are known for adding a unique "attractiveness" to the sounds and instruments passing through them. This effect is achieved through multiple harmonic distortions created by VCA compressors, VCA faders, and other crucial components, such as transistor mixing amplifiers. Using modern components, SSL has developed a circuit that combines the two main sound characteristics in 4K format into a single design. The inherited analog amplification in 4K format provides a controlled amount of finely tuned harmonic distortions with a pleasant sound and a "direct," yet musical high-frequency equalizer, giving your sound the 4K effect and expressiveness that artists and engineers have loved for decades.
