The SSL Revival 4000 is an analog channel strip that recreates the signature sound of the SSL 4000 Series in a compact format. It features a Jensen transformer microphone preamplifier, a B-Series De-Esser, a Dynamics module based on a Class A VCA, and a classic 4-band EQ with the option to choose between "Brown Knob" and "Black Knob" schemes. It also offers flexible routing and integration of external effects.
Reviving the Legendary SSL SL 4000 Series
The Revival 4000 faithfully reproduces the unique sound of the SL 4000 series consoles from the early 1980s, which set an industry standard and shaped the music of iconic artists such as Peter Gabriel, Phil Collins, Brian Adams, Pink Floyd, Prince, U2, Metallica, and many others. Incorporating advanced technologies from the B and E series consoles, the Revival 4000 model delivers the signature sound and sonic flexibility that is the foundation of SSL's legacy.
Starting with the microphone preamplifier section, the Jensen transformer ensures rich sound and pristine clarity. The De-Esser section with a 10:1 ratio helps to tame harsh sibilance across a wide range of audio sources. The Dynamics section, inspired by the E series consoles, offers smooth operation of the Class A VCA dynamics/gate with features like gentle compression, fast attack, and linear release. It also includes typical controls for threshold, release, ratio, and range, as well as a 5-segment gain reduction meter.
The 4-band equalizer section allows switching between the classic brown knob from the E series or the black knob based on the EQ 242. This section features parametric EQ control for low, low-mid, high-mid, and high-frequency ranges, adjustable Q factor, and the option to use bell-shaped curve with fixed Q for high and low frequencies. The Route section enables you to place the Dynamics and De-Esser sections after the equalizer, activating an external side-chain or connecting the stereo system to a second Revival 4000 unit. Lastly, the Master section provides output level adjustment of ±20 dB, insert control, and the ability to switch the source used for the 5-segment master LED indicator.
