The Solid State Logic E-Series Dynamics module for API 500 Series racks is a single module that combines a compressor/limiter and an expander/gate in a 500 Series lunchbox format. The device utilizes circuitry and components similar to the original SSL E Series channels, including a true RMS converter in the sidechain and an amplifier element that replicates the original Class A VCA chip.
Half of the module consists of a compressor/limiter with a ratio control knob that allows you to choose between no compression and full limiting. With the push of a button, you can switch the compression curve from "soft knee" to "hard knee" compression. The threshold knob allows you to set the compression threshold from +4 dB to -26 dB. The release knob allows you to set the release time from 0.1 to 4 ms. The linear release button lets you switch between linear and logarithmic release curves, while the fast attack button allows you to adjust the attack time from 3 ms for a 20 dB gain reduction to 30 ms for a 20 dB gain reduction. For metering, the device is equipped with a 5-segment LED indicator that shows the compressor/limiter activity in red and yellow, and the expander/gate activity in green.
The expander/gate component of the module features an EXP button to switch between a 20:1 ratio gate and a 2:1 expander. You can adjust the range of attenuation or expansion from fully inactive to 40 dB. The threshold control sets the gate or expander triggering level from +4 dB to -26 dB. The threshold circuit is designed with variable hysteresis that increases as the threshold is lowered. This allows the sound of the musical instrument to decay below the threshold value before being gated or expanded by the module. The expander/gate section of the device typically has a linear attack time of 1.5 ms for a 40 dB gain reduction, but this can be changed to a faster attack time of 100 µs for a 40 dB gain reduction by pressing the FAST ATT button. The hold knob allows you to adjust the time from 0.1 to 4 seconds during which the expander/gate will reduce the signal level after it falls below the threshold. There is also an "In" dynamics button that allows you to engage or bypass the entire module in the API 500 Series lunchbox rack setup.
