The driver is the heart of the headphones. It includes a magnet and a diaphragm that vibrate to create sound. Engineers tilted it forward and integrated it into the open-back cup to create a soundstage where it seems like the sound is coming from a specific place in front of you (or behind you). Close your eyes and imagine yourself on stage: the saxophonist slightly left of center, the piano slightly right, the guitar amp behind the saxophone.
The impressive frequency range of the HD 505 covers sounds that you feel more than hear (below 20 Hz) as well as the high frequencies typical of string instruments (above 20 kHz). Close to Harman Curve Frequency Response
