The model features a completely metal housing, eliminating any interference, and differs from the traditionally minimalist style of the brand's boxes with a large number of control elements on a thick aluminum front panel.
In the center, there is a smooth input impedance adjustment knob, which is a somewhat unusual and convenient solution. This stepless resistance adjustment is possible even during playback. On the right, there are four reliable mechanical toggles. They allow you to mute the sound, choose between two frequency correction standards (RIAA or DECCA), and switch to a fixed impedance. There is also the option to select one of three gain coefficients for unbalanced and balanced circuits (40, 50, 60 dB for RCA and 46, 56, 66 dB for XLR). On the left side, there is a power switch of a similar type with a blue LED.
The circuitry of the Pro-Ject Phono Box RS is based on the "dual mono" principle. The preamp chip used is the SSM 2019 from Analog Devices. The output stage has low resistance. There is an infrasound filter that eliminates low-frequency parasitic vibrations caused by the weight of the vinyl record and the turntable mechanics. The Pro-Ject Phono Box RS phono preamp is equipped with balanced and unbalanced inputs and outputs, all located on its rear side. There is also a filter switch, a switch between XLR and RCA connectors, a grounding terminal, and two DIP switch terminals for selecting cartridge load capacitance settings. The Phono Box RS model receives power from a separate external power supply unit that connects to it via a special connector.
