Pro-Ject voltage step-up transformers are passive devices that amplify the signal from moving coil cartridges to match the signal from moving magnet cartridges. This allows for a simpler and cleaner signal path compared to active devices. The MC Step Up Box DS3 B is suitable for balanced connections and features high-quality Lundahl LL1678 transformers. It has both balanced and unbalanced connections and offers different gain options. The MC Step Up Box S3 is designed to connect to a moving magnet phono preamp built into an amplifier.
In the past, step-up transformers were almost necessary for optimal processing of low-output MC cartridges. At that time, active amplification technology was too noisy, contradicting the purpose of low-output signal cartridge design. The step-up transformer eliminates active amplification from the equation and passively amplifies the signal in a traditional way. Operating completely independently of the power supply, it silently adds 21 or 24 dB, equivalent to the output power of MM cartridges (which is why the output of the step-up transformer is connected to the MM phono preamp input).
