The KEF LS50 Meta speakers are the successors to the LS50, featuring the company's new advanced solution - Metamaterial Absorption Technology (MAT). This same technology is also utilized in the wireless KEF LS50 Wireless II speakers.
Features:
- Design: two-way with a rear-mounted port
- HF driver: 25mm ventilated aluminium dome
- LF driver: 130mm magnesium/aluminium alloy cone
- Crossover frequency: 2.1kHz
- Amplifier power requirement: 40 - 100W
- Maximum sound pressure level: 106dB
Uni-Q Driver with MAT
The KEF LS50 Meta is a passive two-way monitor speaker equipped with the 12th generation Uni-Q coaxial driver and the Metamaterial Absorption Technology (MAT) disc, absorbing backward radiation. The sound is incredibly accurate and detailed in any room.
This new driver array provides less coloration, lower distortion, and highly detailed and natural sound reproduction, evenly distributed throughout the room. The Uni-Q driver for the LS50 Meta is based on the Uni-Q used in the KEF R Series speakers with modifications to suit the system's design. The addition of MAT technology required significant changes to the driver's construction, improving technologies such as tweeter duct damping.
As the R Series speakers are 3-way systems whereas the LS50 Meta is a 2-way system, the midrange driver had to cover a much wider frequency range, including low frequencies. While it integrates well into the system, it presented performance challenges. Therefore, KEF engineers made changes to the midrange driver's magnetic system, suspension, and cone to achieve smooth operation.
Metamaterials
The Metamaterial Absorption Technology (MAT) was developed by KEF engineers in collaboration with the Hong Kong-based company Acoustic Metamaterials Group. This material allows for the absorption of almost all sound energy from the rear of the driver, occupying minimal space in the speaker enclosure.
KEF's MAT technology utilizes a special labyrinthine structure, with each segment absorbing sound at specific frequency bands, behaving like an "acoustic black hole" absorbing 99% of unwanted sound energy, compared to traditional absorbers like polyester which only absorb around 60%.
Construction
The construction of the KEF LS50 Meta cabinet is identical to the original LS50 speakers, with some modifications to the rear panel for improved performance and aesthetics. The speakers can be placed on any flat surface or on the matching KEF S2 stands, designed to complement the speakers in size and color.
Package includes:
