The Shangri-La Jr is a circular or full-size electrostatic headphones with a bias voltage of 550V-650V, making them compatible with most amplifiers. Inside the driver is a reduced circular version of the large oval diaphragm used in the Shangri-La electrostatic headphones. However, the materials and technologies used are very similar. This means the use of Hifiman nano-particle coating on a very thin "nanotechnological" diaphragm with a diameter of only 0.001 mm.
The concept of a nanotechnological membrane is not new to HIFIMAN. They have long applied this "thinness" principle in their planar drivers using NSD or NEO "supernano" technology. The main argument is that the lighter the diaphragm, the faster it responds and the less likely there is to be distortion.
Key differences in design lie more in the details and cable connection system. Like most electrostatic headphones, the Shangri-La Jr cable is not detachable for safety reasons due to the high voltage. Therefore, the entire Shangri-La Jr headphone cup is a solid monochromatic silver construction, which includes the cable connection at the base, making it slightly deeper than the Susvara cup. The Susvara grille looks more intricate compared to the solid grille and cup of the Shangri-La Jr with an additional logo located on the front and center, and a distinctive aged silver finish.
