The Genelec 8020D is an active portable two-way nearfield monitor designed for use in small stationary and mobile studios, for streaming and post-production studios. It can also be used as a personal monitoring system. In comparison to previous models, it offers higher SPL and lower power consumption.

The monitor incorporates various modern proprietary technologies. For example, Minimum Diffraction Enclosure (MDE) made from specially shaped cast aluminum, resulting in a monitor that is comparable in weight to competitors made from MDF and composite materials. Another technology, Directivity Control Waveguide (DCW), adjusts the waveguide configuration to the amplifiers. Lastly, the unique design of the Iso-Pod stand reduces vibrations and delivers the purest sound possible.
One of the main features of the Genelec 8020D monitor is its bi-amp configuration, where the signal for low and mid frequencies is separately amplified from the high frequencies. The speaker also includes an active crossover with a 3 kHz frequency separation. The total power of the amplifiers is 100W (50+50). The single XLR input is located on the rear panel, along with DIP switches for built-in low/high-frequency attenuators and filters. There is also a standby mode switch utilizing Intelligent Signal Sensing (ISS) technology, allowing the device to consume less than 0.5W of energy while on standby.
The cabinet of the Genelec 8020D features a 4" woofer cone and a 0.75" metal dome tweeter, delivering a flat frequency response and wide sound dispersion. The speakers utilize neodymium magnets to minimize interference with surrounding equipment and protect against overheating. The rear panel houses a round bass reflex port, enhancing the lower frequency range. The cabinet is also magnetically shielded to prevent signal interference.
