Vincent CD-S7 not only combines the main advantages of both tube and transistor technologies, but is also equipped with a built-in preamplifier, allowing for decent savings in case of absence of other sources.
Features:
DAC: Burr-Brown PCM-1796; bandwidth: 20 Hz - 20000 Hz; tube configuration: 2 x 12AX7B, 1 x 6Z4; transport mechanism: Philips VAN 1202; signal-to-noise ratio: 94 dB.
The term "hybrid" when applied to a CD player means different things for different manufacturers. Most often it refers to the ability to play SACD or DVD-Audio, in this case it refers to a combination of tubes and transistors in the design.
The unit is solidly assembled and notably heavy for a player. The massive, well-shielded aluminum chassis and huge toroidal transformer coil would do credit to a High-End amplifier. The design is simple, utilitarian, but with a twist in the form of a window where the tubes faintly glow. Their illumination can be dimmed or completely turned off.
The transport is provided by the Philips VAN 1202, notable for its durability, low noise level, and stable operation. The digital-to-analog conversion is carried out by a pair of BurrBrown PCM-1796 DACs, working up to 96 kHz with 24-bit resolution. The output stage is built with three 12AX7 tubes and one 12AU7, the entire system operates in pure class A. A separate tube stage is provided for headphones. Connection of an external DAC can be done through the existing coaxial output. In addition to its functions, the player can also work as a preamplifier, with an adjustable output signal level. For convenience in working with power amplifiers, there is a 12V trigger. This feature makes the device significantly more attractive in terms of price, especially considering the cost of a preamplifier and source combined.
The remote control is housed in an aluminum casing with chrome buttons, emphasizing the device's status. Thanks to the refined design, one can easily overlook its somewhat old-fashioned ergonomics. Additionally, almost a full set of controls is present on the player's front panel.
The soft and comfortable sound, characteristic of tube systems, receives an additional boost of vitality and energy. Of course, much depends on the amplifier, but in this case, there is a choice of which aspect of the device's character to focus on more.
