The Smiths are a British rock band that formed in Manchester, England, in 1982 and have since been widely regarded as one of the most important British alternative bands to emerge from the 1980s indie rock scene. The band have had seven albums top the UK Indie Charts, placing them ahead of Depeche Mode and New Order. The band's music has had a significant influence on the development of rock, particularly Britpop.
