The Pro-Ject Tube Box S phono preamplifier has similar basic parameters to the Tube Box II model, but it has improved sound characteristics. The external design of the phono preamp features a taller enclosure, with the tubes practically hidden inside - only the tops of the two ECC83 tubes are exposed, covered by metal rings. This design provides sufficient airflow for proper cooling of the glass tube bulbs and allows us to see that it is indeed a tube device.

The rear panel of the phono preamp features two jumper "banks" to adjust the capacitance and resistance of the input circuit to match the characteristics of the connected cartridge precisely. The Pro-Ject Tube Box S can work with both MM and MC-type cartridges (the necessary gain coefficient is selected using the corresponding switch). An external power supply unit providing 18 volts of alternating current is used to power the device.
The Pro-Ject Tube Box S phono preamplifier is manufactured using high-class components. Precision passive audio-grade components and gold-plated contact tubes are used in the RIAA correction circuits. The contact surfaces of the input and output RCA connectors are also gold-plated. The preamp circuits feature a "dual mono" configuration, ensuring identical parameters for both channels. Special damping pads are used to provide additional protection for the tubes against mechanical vibrations. The device is housed in a metal enclosure (available in black or silver), which effectively shields its sensitive electronic circuits from external interference.
This phono preamplifier is suitable for use with high-class vinyl record players and provides highly accurate and musical sound reproduction. Thanks to its compact size, the Pro-Ject Tube Box S can be placed on the same AV stand shelf as the turntable.
