Description

The Pro-Ject Pre Box RS Digital is a versatile device that combines a digital-to-analog converter, a high-class preamplifier, and a headphone amplifier. In fact, this model combines all the features of the DAC Box RS, with the addition of a preamplifier section. It is available in both solid-state and tube versions, allowing users to choose their preferred option.

The device features a compact metal housing with a minimalist design, typical of all components in the Pro-Ject Box series. The front panel includes a volume control knob, made with a premium-grade Blue Alps variable resistor.

The digital-to-analog converter in the Pro-Ject Pre Box RS Digital is built with two PCM1792 chips, operating in a dual differential mode. A unique feature of this model is the presence of a second independent DAC on the PCM5102 chip, which can be selected using a switch on the front panel. The device supports digital streams ranging from 44.1kHz to 384kHz, as well as DSD65 and DSD128, with parameters displayed using LED indicators. Additionally, the Pre Box RS Digital offers two selectable filters, each contributing to its unique sound profile.

Despite its compact size, the DAC preamplifier is equipped with ten inputs, nine digital and one analog. The analog input can be used in both unbalanced and balanced configurations. Digital inputs include two coaxial, four optical, AES/EBU, and USB. The device also includes an output for the DAC clock generator and an I2S input, compatible with the CD Box RS.

The analog preamplifier section operates in a dual mono configuration, class A without feedback. The headphone amplifier features switchable sensitivity to accommodate various impedance models. The device comes with an external power supply, and one upgrade option includes replacing it with a more powerful Power Box RS. A remote control is included with the device.
