The Ortofon MC Quintet Red moving coil cartridge is one of the latest additions and the flagship of the company's MC cartridge series. Like its predecessor, this cartridge provides accurate, detailed, and highly dynamic sound characteristic of the best cartridges in this class, but thanks to the modernization of critical construction elements, the parameters of the Ortofon MC Quintet Red have been further improved.
The cartridge is housed in an ABS and aluminum body. Ortofon has extensive experience in creating non-resonant structures using various materials, and this combination was chosen deliberately. The Ortofon MC Quintet Red body is completely free from its own resonances and effectively dampens any external vibrations, which is essential for obtaining high-quality sound from sensitive MC cartridges. The stylus holder in this model is made of aluminum, as in Ortofon's Hi-Fi class cartridges, providing exceptional detail and neutrality of sound. The precision elliptical stylus with a radius of 8/18 microns ensures excellent tracking and transmission of the finest nuances of the recorded sound. The cartridge has a standard tracking force in the range of 2.1 to 2.5 grams, making it compatible with almost any tonearm. The other cartridge parameters will also not cause difficulties when setting it up on different tonearms.
The Ortofon MC Quintet Red produces the standard output voltage for this class, which is 0.5 mV. The magnetic system consists of neodymium magnets mounted on the cartridge chassis and a coil wound with copper wire. The internal resistance of the Ortofon MC Quintet Red is 7 ohms, and the recommended input impedance of the phono preamp for it is over 20 ohms. The cartridge is one of the best in its class and offers an extremely favorable quality-to-price ratio.
