Description

The Neumann KM 184 MT is a modern small-diaphragm condenser microphone that offers a cardioid polar pattern, ensuring consistent sound quality across all frequencies. Its natural and transparent sound, along with its low self-noise and ability to handle high sound pressure levels, have made it a globally recognized standard for both stage and studio applications. From classical piano to heavy drumming styles, the KM 184 delivers exceptional precision and accuracy.

The Neumann 180 series consists of three models with different polar patterns: the KM 183 (omnidirectional), KM 184 (cardioid), and KM 185 (hypercardioid). These microphones cater to a wide range of stage and studio needs. Unlike the modular KM A and KM D series, the 180 series microphones are non-modular, providing a more cost-effective solution. This series ensures accurate reproduction of the original acoustic event, without adding or subtracting any sonic imprint.

The cardioid polar pattern of the KM 184 is frequency-independent, meaning it rejects sound from the rear (180°) effectively, even at low frequencies. This engineering masterpiece by Neumann excels at capturing sound without any coloration, even at wide capture angles.

With its smooth and linear frequency response, the KM 184 offers a slight boost around 9 kHz for added brilliance. Its transformerless amplifier design allows for a wide dynamic range of 125 dB and preserves the sonic integrity of the capsule.

The KM 184 boasts a low self-noise level of just 13 dB and can handle high sound pressure levels of up to 138 dB without distortion. Its low-impedance output stage enables it to operate on cable runs up to 300 meters without any loss of transmission.

This versatile microphone is ideal for both studio and live applications. Its transparent sound makes it perfect for a wide range of acoustic instruments including piano, drums, percussion, acoustic guitar, bass guitar, violin, cello, woodwinds, and brass instruments. Whether used for soloists or ensembles, the KM 184 delivers exceptional off-axis behavior, making it suitable for stereo and surround recording applications, providing superior imaging quality.

While not optimized for human vocals specifically, the KM 184 is often used for classical vocal recordings where sound authenticity is crucial. Its small size makes it visually unobtrusive and well-suited for applications in television and radio broadcasting.

Features include a small-diaphragm condenser microphone, low-impedance output for lossless transmission over long cables, transformerless circuitry, low self-noise level of 13 dB, impedance of 50 Ohms, minimum load impedance of 1000 Ohms, XLR connector, requires phantom power, frequency range of 20 Hz - 20,000 Hz, sensitivity of 15 mV/Pa, signal-to-noise ratio of 81, maximum sound pressure level of 138 dB, dimensions of 22 x 22 x 107 mm, and weight of 80 g.

The package includes the Neumann KM 184 MT microphone, Neumann WSN 100 windscreen, Neumann SG 21 holder, and documentation.

Impedance, Ohms

No higher than 32 Ohms for smartphone headphones. When using a good player or amplifier, it can be up to 100 Ohms. For stationary models you should coordinate the impedance with the amplifier power

Microphone polar pattern

Omnidirectional, cardioid and supercardioid. It determines the sensitivity of the microphone to sound relative to the direction or angle, i.e. shows how well the microphone "hears" sound from different sides

Glossary of terms
cardioid

The polar pattern of the microphone that picks up the sound in front of it.

Словарь терминов
Microphone type
condenser

A metal membrane consisting of plates (a condenser) oscillates under the influence of sound air flows converting a sound wave into an electromagnetic one.

Necessary for condenser microphones

Glossary of terms
yes

Simultaneous transmission of DC power and information signals over one wire.
