The Simaudio Moon 791 network player/preamp goes beyond simple streaming functions, combining high-quality phono stage capabilities with a precise M-VOL 3 volume regulator. The North 791 and 891 models now come with a phono stage section specifically designed to meet the demands of customers who previously requested this feature.
The North series devices maintain their recognizable design with dual-tone symmetrical casings, now enhanced with vertical radiators and perforations in the top panels. The North models (excluding pure power amplifiers) also feature color OLED touchscreens. According to Moon, these devices "work as a whole without compromising sound quality," and the North collection incorporates new volume control technologies.
The devices feature signature technologies such as MDCA distortion suppression amplifier, MDB damping base, and MDE digital driver. The MDCA technology in the power amplifiers reduces distortion to previously unattainable levels, while MDB mechanical isolation protects against unwanted micro-vibrations. MDE enhances the digital characteristics of each device. The M in each abbreviation stands for Moon.
The MDE-2 (Moon DAC engine-2) resynchronizes with precision up to picoseconds using a FPGA. The FPGA controls the ES-9038Pro chip using all eight available channels in Hyperstream mode. The cascaded DAC in the 791 model can be configured for both fixed and variable output. The analog DAC cascades directly to the device's preamplifier stage, benefiting from a short signal path. Moon does not disclose the DAC chip in their literature, possibly to avoid assumptions about sound characteristics.
The Moon 791 provides users with seven digital inputs, including one HDMI Arc, as well as three analog inputs and two outputs independently configured for variable or fixed volume.
Streaming Services
Services such as Qobuz, Highresolutionaudio, Deezer, Spotify, and Tidal are present and functional, as well as various internet radio stations including Radio Paradise. The DAC and streamer support MQA, and the device will be ready to work with Tidal Max once Tidal completes the necessary encoding on their end. The 791 is ready for Roon integration.
The North Collection features the BRM-1 remote control, a battery-operated device with a metal egg-shaped body and a built-in touchscreen display. Users can see information about the system's status and the playing track directly on the remote. Control for North Collection products is through Bluetooth, eliminating the need for direct line of sight and reaching a range of approximately fifty meters.
Developed in symbiosis with the Moon 761 power amplifier, this high-performance network player/preamp with its robust construction, distinctive appearance, and numerous technologies developed by Moon promises to deliver a very enjoyable listening experience when paired with the appropriate power amplifier: an experience that easily competes with the best systems.
