Load is the sixth studio album by the heavy metal band Metallica, released on June 4, 1996, through Elektra Records. It sold 680,000 copies in its first week (making it Metallica's highest-selling album in a single week) and debuted at number one on the Billboard 200 chart (and spent four consecutive weeks there). The album has sold over 5 million copies worldwide and is certified quintuple platinum by the RIAA.

Metallica has had a major influence on the development of metal and is (along with Slayer, Megadeth, and Anthrax) one of the "big four of thrash metal". Metallica's albums have sold a total of over 100 million copies worldwide, making it the most commercially successful metal band. In 2011, one of the largest metal music magazines, Kerrang!, in its June issue recognized Metallica as the best metal band of the last 30 years.
