The Magnat 990 MTT model is the first turntable in the company's history. Its creation was guided by the experience and knowledge accumulated by the company's specialists over 45 years of developing Hi-Fi analog audio technology. The company's standards are so high that the first Magnat turntable for playing vinyl records simply had to be created using direct drive. The goal of the development was to combine the reliability of studio and DJ turntables with audiophile-level sound characteristics.
Knowledge and Passion
A turntable from specialists in loudspeaker systems? Yes! Two different Hi-Fi components have more in common than one might think: both the cartridge and the loudspeaker are sound transducers. This is where you can hear each stage of quality most distinctly. What's more, there are many passionate Hi-Fi enthusiasts at Magnat who still prefer turntables for listening to music. Therefore, it was an obvious step to develop a turntable that could embody all the knowledge the company has accumulated over more than 45 years of Hi-Fi development.
Motor and Turntable
Magnat found a supplier who could perfectly implement their ideas: a motor that offers three speeds (33, 45, 78 RPM), almost perfect synchronization (<0.08%), and a colossal torque of 2.2 kgf/cm. The 12-inch (30.5 cm) turntable is made of special plastic known for its high torsional rigidity and resonance behavior similar to vinyl, which turned out to be very beneficial in terms of sound. According to the manufacturer, this provides the most detailed sound. Additionally, a felt mat was added for enhanced sound quality. This means that records can also be used directly on the turntable without an additional mat. The turntable's dimensions were specially designed to match the motor precisely. Furthermore, a quartz control system is used to ensure precise synchronization, eliminating the need for speed adjustments.
Optimized Housing
Magnat is a manufacturer of loudspeakers and has the best technologies for detecting and suppressing resonances, which they were able to leverage in the development of the MTT 990. The housing is made of MDF and is so strong and heavy that it provides optimal conditions for the motor. The MTT 990 feet were also designed according to Magnat's specifications and demonstrate an extremely high degree of vibration absorption. Another detail: the power transformer has a hanging suspended design to avoid further resonance. The housing has a glossy finish.
Tonearm and Cartridge
The MTT 990 tonearm is not a standard design; many details have been modified. It features a J-shaped bent 10-inch arm, which the manufacturer considers the best shape for minimizing tracking angle errors. The tonearm tube is made of a special aluminum alloy, and the internal wiring is made of high-purity copper wires from Japanese specialist Mogami. The tonearm is equipped with four stainless steel ball-bearing pivots with carbon steel ball bearings. To facilitate the installation of various cartridges, the Magnat MTT 990 tonearm is height adjustable and has a bayonet head for convenient and accurate cartridge installation. The tonearm falls into the so-called medium-mass category. This means that a wide range of MM and MC systems can be used for upgrades or modifications to the MTT 990. However, the quality of the drive and tonearm is so high that even high-class cartridges find a suitable environment here. The “X” version of the Magnat MTT 990 is also available without a cartridge.
The Magnat MTT 990 (non-X) is a ready-to-play version equipped with the almost legendary Japanese Audio Technica AT 95E cartridge. Its vitality and naturalness have made it one of the best-selling Hi-Fi cartridges of all time. Naturally, the AT 95E is already perfectly set up on the MTT 990.
