Closer is the second and final studio album by the British rock band Joy Division. Originally scheduled for release on May 8, 1980, it was not released until July, following the suicide of singer Ian Curtis. The album ranks 157th on Rolling Stone magazine's list of "The 500 Greatest Albums of All Time."
Compared to their previous album, Unknown Pleasures, Closer made more extensive use of synthesizers and studio effects. The album's songs also convey a sense of despair and funereal themes, also expressed in the album's cover art. Bono of U2 was present in the studio during the recording of the album.
