The Hegel P30A is a benchmark preamplifier. Its job is to control the power amplifier using a signal that maximally corresponds to the music.

The preamplifier is the most important component in a great sounding system, and it is the hardest to set up correctly. Signals with very low amplitudes from the source easily distort, hence deep technical knowledge and smart engineering are necessary to ensure the signal remains unchanged throughout the preamplifier. Matched pair field-effect transistors are used, which have no higher-order harmonic distortions.
In any batch of transistors, there will always be small variations in measurements. This may be within what is considered normal deviation, but for such sensitive electronics, this is simply not enough. Therefore, Hegel's founder and chief engineer measures and carefully selects transistors that have exactly the same nominal values. Perfectly matched transistors are paramount to the operation of the preamplifier, making the sound of the Hegel P30A very smooth and natural without compromising on details.
Furthermore, the internal layout is designed in a way to ensure that the signal path inside the preamplifier is as short as possible. This reduces the likelihood of distortion caused by electrical interference. To further minimize distortion, the number of electrical components through which the signal passes has also been reduced. In the Hegel P30A, the musical signal passes only through two transistors and an ultra-low noise attenuator.
The P30A model also utilizes Hegel's patented SoundEngine technology. This actively monitors musical signal distortions and corrects intermodulation distortions using a direct feedback design. SoundEngine effectively eliminates distortions in real-time as the signal amplifies.
