The new Series 700 continues Bowers & Wilkins' policy of implementing concepts and technologies inherited from its flagship lineup. After an extensive three-year research program, almost every element of the new series has been transformed, from the design of cabinets, drivers, and finishes, to key acoustic and mechanical improvements.
Beautiful design, premium details
For the first time in the Series 700, slimmer cabinets with smoothly curved front panels and drivers installed in external "capsules" are introduced in the new line, creating a direct visual and technical parallel with the Series 800 Diamond lineup. This shape significantly reduces the influence of the front panel on sound quality, minimizing sound diffraction effects on the cabinet. As a result, the new series acoustically "disappears" better than ever, allowing you to focus solely on the music without distractions from the speaker cabinet resonances.
The new cabinet shapes are not only more elegant than before, they are also offered in a completely new Mocha finish, a beautiful grained wood that complements the updated proportions and premium details of the new Series 700 speakers. Mocha joins the previously available Gloss Black and Satin White finishes, forming a three-component range for most markets worldwide.
Enhanced drivers, new acoustic designs
Making a significant advancement in acoustic characteristics, Bowers & Wilkins now offers its iconic top-tweeter technology in a solid aluminum housing in four models of the new Series 700, which account for half of the entire lineup. Floorstanding speakers like the 702 S3 and 703 S3, as well as the bookshelf 705 S3 and center channel speaker HTM71 S3 are now equipped with top-tweeters. This means that for the first time in the Series 700, owners have the opportunity to create a full home theater system based on models with top tweeters.
The top-tweeter design itself has been completely reworked in the new lineup. The housing of the new Series 700 tweeter, made from a solid aluminum block as always, has been significantly elongated, reducing distortions and providing even cleaner sound. This elongated shape is further improved by introducing a two-point vibration decoupling system, which better isolates the tweeter mechanically from the speaker cabinet, providing a more open and spacious soundstage.
In addition to these mechanical improvements, the tweeter dome retains the characteristics of Bowers & Wilkins' Carbon Dome model with a first-resonance frequency of 47kHz, combined with improved vented voice coils and new magnets. Even models with front panel tweeters – 707 S3, 706 S3, 704 S3, and HTM72 S3 – benefit from all these changes, along with significantly elongated load tubes working to reduce distortions and ensure cleaner sound.
Bionic suspension
In all 3-way speaker systems of the new lineup, Bowers & Wilkins has introduced the revolutionary bionic suspension, initially introduced last year in the new 800 Diamond Series. By replacing the traditional fabric suspension with a bionic one for the centralizing diaphragm, which is used in almost all speaker systems created in the last decades, unwanted noises during operation of the midrange driver have been significantly reduced.
When used in conjunction with all other patented Bowers & Wilkins technologies for midrange drivers, including vibration isolation for the entire midrange unit, aluminum driver chassis with tuned masses dampers to reduce resonances, fixed FST diaphragm suspension, and the famous Continuum material, the bionic suspension achieves simply stunning sound clarity in the midrange frequencies.
Sound quality optimization
To provide these drivers with the best platform for success, the new Series 700 introduces upgraded speaker terminals, based on the Series 800, offering stronger contacts and better compatibility with spade connectors. Audio signals then pass through carefully upgraded crossovers, which continue to use audiophile Mundorf capacitors along with multiple bypass capacitors. Heat sinks for dissipating heat from the crossover have also been improved to achieve an even cleaner sound.
All models in the lineup are equipped with upgraded larger diameter bass reflex ports, providing more significant airflow capacity for a more expansive and spatial sound. In the floorstanding 702 S3, this approach is taken one step further - even closer than ever to the Series 800 Diamond configuration - by reorienting the port downwards with an air outlet on the built-in base. The result is a robust and powerful speaker system which is easier than ever to place in your home. Finally, all floorstanding models are equipped with significantly improved spikes for floor anchoring, with the 702 S3 featuring super-strong M10 spikes.
