The new 700 Series continues Bowers & Wilkins' commitment to implementing concepts and technologies inherited from its flagship lineup. After an extensive three-year research program, almost every element of the new series has been transformed, from cabinet design, drivers, and finishes, to key acoustic and mechanical improvements.
Beautiful design, premium details
For the first time in the 700 Series, slimmer cabinets with a smoothly curved front panel and drivers mounted in external "capsules" have been introduced, creating a direct visual and technical parallel with the 800 Diamond Series. This shape significantly reduces the panel's impact on sound quality, minimizing sound diffraction effects on the cabinet. As a result, the new series acoustically "disappears" better than ever, allowing you to focus solely on the music without distraction from cabinet resonance.
The new cabinet shapes are not only more elegant than before, but they are also offered in a brand new Mocha finish, a beautiful, grainy wood finish that complements the updated proportions and premium details of the new 700 Series speaker cabinets. Mocha joins the previously offered Gloss Black and Satin White finishes, forming a three-component range for most markets worldwide.
Enhanced drivers, new acoustic forms
Taking a significant step forward in acoustic characteristics, Bowers & Wilkins now offers its iconic top-mounted tweeter technology in a solid casing in four models of the new 700 Series, comprising half of the entire range. Floorstanding speakers 702 S3 and 703 S3, as well as bookshelf 705 S3 and center channel HTM71 S3, now feature top-mounted tweeters. This allows owners to create a full home theater system for the first time in the 700 Series using models with top-mounted tweeters.
The top-mounted tweeter form itself has been completely redesigned in the new lineup. The casing of the new series tweeter, made from a solid aluminum block as always, has been significantly elongated to reduce distortion and provide even cleaner sound. This elongated form is further improved by the introduction of a two-point decoupling, which better isolates the tweeter mechanically from the speaker cabinet, creating a more open and clear soundstage.
In addition to these mechanical improvements, the dome tweeter retains the characteristics of Bowers & Wilkins' Carbon Dome model with a first resonance frequency of 47kHz, combined with improved ventilated voice coils and new magnets. Even models equipped with front panel-mounted tweeters – 707 S3, 706 S3, 704 S3, and HTM72 S3 – benefit from all these changes, along with a significantly elongated loading tube that works to reduce distortion and deliver cleaner sound.
Bionic suspension
In all 3-way speakers of the new lineup, Bowers & Wilkins has introduced the revolutionary bionic suspension, first introduced last year in the new 800 Diamond Series. By replacing the traditional fabric suspension of the centering washer with a bionic one, it has been possible to significantly reduce unwanted noises during midrange driver operation.
When used in conjunction with all other patented Bowers & Wilkins technologies for midrange drivers, including vibration isolation for the entire midrange unit, aluminum driver chassis with tuned mass dampers to reduce resonances, fixed FST diffuser suspension, and, of course, the famous Continuum material, we achieve simply stunning clarity of sound in the midrange frequencies.
Sound quality optimization
To provide these drivers with the best platform for success, the new 700 Series features upgraded speaker terminals, based on the 800 Series, with stronger contacts and better suited for use with spade connectors. Audio signals then pass through meticulously updated crossovers, which continue to use audiophile Mundorf capacitors supplemented by several bypass capacitors. Heat sinks for cooling the crossover have also been improved to achieve an even cleaner sound.
All models in the lineup feature larger diameter phase-inverter ports for increased throughput, delivering a more expansive and spatial sound. In the floorstanding 702 S3, this approach is taken a step further – closer than ever to the configuration of the 800 Diamond Series – thanks to the downward orientation of the port with an air exit on the integrated base. The result is a robust and powerful speaker system that is easier than ever to place in your home. Finally, all floorstanding models are equipped with significantly enhanced spikes for floor mounting. The 702 S3 comes with extra-strong M10 spikes.
