Developed by a team of former AKG employees, this set of large-diaphragm condenser microphones with multiple polar patterns includes two OC818 studio condenser microphones, two traditional microphone clips, two windshields for reducing noise from breath and air bursts, and a protective carrying case. The handcrafted 1-inch ceramic capsule features two polymer-coated membranes with gold plating, allowing for various polar patterns. The 5-position switch lets you set the OC818 to figure 8, hypercardioid, cardioid, omnidirectional, or wide cardioid. Each diaphragm is connected to a separate output connector for dual-channel recording, enabling you to create individual polar pattern characteristics in five frequency ranges using the open-source PolarDesigner module or create adjustable stereo imaging with the StereoCreator module (also open-source).
Alternatively, an additional output can be connected to the OCR8 Bluetooth module if you prefer wireless control and selection of 255 polar patterns using the free PolarPilot app for iOS/Android. Front panel switches provide easy access to pad and volume level settings. Set the pad value to -10 or -20 dB to avoid distortion when recording loud sound sources like drums or guitar cabinets. Activate the high-pass filter at 40, 80, or 160 Hz to eliminate low-frequency noise, including rumble and proximity effects. The OC818 housing is made of a zinc-aluminum alloy for durability and strength.
Polar Pattern Selection
The 5-position polar pattern switch lets you select figure 8, hypercardioid, cardioid (dual cardioid mode when using the secondary output), omnidirectional, and "preset mode," which defaults to wide cardioid but can be customized using the free PolarPilot app for iOS/Android and additional Bluetooth key OCR8 (required for PolarPilot control).
For secure microphone mounting, the set includes 2 metal and plastic OCH8 holders, as well as two OCS8 anti-vibration mounts with adjustable tilt angle for precise microphone positioning. The OCW8 windshields are made of gray acoustic foam to protect the capsules from moisture and dirt. The 1.2-meter XLR cables come with black plastic clips for convenience. All components are housed in an aluminum case with a foam insert for storage.
