Stax Ltd. is a Japanese manufacturer of the world famous High End electrostatic headphones or, as they call them, “Earspeakers” (literally, ear loudspeakers).
The first electrostatic headphones, the Stax SR-1, were released in 1960. Over the next thirty-six years, the company produced a variety of amplifiers, headphones, tonearms, CD players, DACs, phono cartridges, and acoustics.
In 1995, fifty-seven years after the company was founded, it was declared bankrupt. The company was revived in 1996 as the new company STAX.
In December 2011, Chinese speaker manufacturer Edifier announced it had acquired 100% of Stax.
