The company was founded by session musician Skipper Wise and sound engineer Martins Saulespurens. The company's name is an acronym for Baltic Latvian Universal Electronics. Its headquarters are located in Westlake Village, California.

In 2008, Skipper and Martins sold Blue Microphones to Transom Capital, a private equity firm in Southern California. In 2013, the Riverside Company acquired Blue Microphones from Transom Capital. In 2018, Logitech purchased the company for $117 million.

Blue Microphones specializes in developing and producing condenser, ribbon, and dynamic microphones, as well as USB microphones, microphone preamplifiers, accessories, and headphones.

Among its studio models, notable ones include Bottle Rocket Stage One, Bottle Rocket Stage Two, and The Application Specific Series, each with its unique sound signature.

In the consumer microphone market, the USB microphones Yeti, Snowball, and Spark Digital are particularly popular. Spark Digital was the first studio condenser microphone with compatibility for USB and iOS connections. Yeti was the first THX-certified microphone.

In 2000, the company received the Electronic Musician 2000 Editor’s Choice Microphone of the Year award for its Blueberry condenser microphone model. In 2009, it won the RetailVision Best Hardware Peripheral for its Mikey and Eyeball 2.0 models.
