Beryllium's incredible rigidity makes it the ideal material for the 25mm dome tweeter cone. After two years of research and development, Focal became the first company in the world to manufacture an inverted dome made of pure beryllium, capable of covering over five octaves (1000 Hz - 40 kHz).
The composite "W" sandwich cone allows complete optimization of the frequency response by controlling three key parameters: lightness, rigidity, and damping. In Focal, the letter "W" stands for "glass/glass" since it typically consists of two layers of glass fabric "sandwiched" on a core of structural foam. The benefits of glass fabric lie in its incredibly thin weave of very long fibers. This choice offers mass and size significantly smaller than aramid fibers or other Kevlar fabrics, which create coloration in the midrange. It is also important to note that the molecular bond between resin and glass is higher than aramid fibers. The cone's structure is more homogeneous, and its behavior during bending is much better. These unique characteristics of lightness and rigidity provide control over signal transmission speed within the material.
