TLM 103 is a large-diaphragm microphone that is widely used in professional and semi-professional audio recording. It is the perfect choice when you need high-quality sound but have a limited budget. Thanks to its reliable and transformerless circuitry, which is the same as some other Neumann microphone models, the TLM 103 has very low self-noise and can effectively capture high sound pressure level signals. Its cardioid polar pattern, derived from the U 87, provides a well-balanced and effective reduction of off-axis signals.
Polar Pattern
The TLM 103 comes with a large-diaphragm capsule and a cardioid polar pattern. This pattern is suitable for most recording situations as it effectively reduces unwanted side signals. Off-axis sounds, which the microphone is less sensitive to, are reproduced naturally. This feature helps avoid acoustic feedback during live concerts or when recording with studio monitors.
Acoustic Characteristics
The Neumann logo on the microphone body indicates the working side of the TLM 103 capsule. The capsule is an improved version of the S 87 capsule used in renowned U 67/U 87 microphone models. The frequency response is linear up to 5 kHz, followed by a wide, flat boost of +4 dB in the high-frequency range. The large grille protects the capsule from loud sounds and wind noise without affecting its transparency. These high-performance characteristics are achieved without any resonance correction, allowing the microphone to accurately reproduce musical and speech details without altering their coloration.
Reliability
The entire construction is securely mounted inside the housing with an elastic suspension to minimize handling noise. Additionally, the TLM 103 features an extra elastic mounting for the capsule. Its frequency range extends down to 20 Hz, ensuring faithful reproduction of low-frequency signals without any timbre changes. However, the wider frequency range makes the microphone more susceptible to handling and wind noise. To address this, elastic suspension accessories like the EA 1 are provided. For close-up vocal recording, it is recommended to use the windscreen shields PS 10 and PS 20 for extra protection.
