This mini-combine is made not just simple, but very simple: a thin cylinder made of black-painted aluminum, with a standard 3.5mm jack on one end and an 80-centimeter wire with a Lightning connector on the other. On the sides of the cylinder, the microphone hole and three playback control buttons are neatly placed opposite each other, functioning the same way as any wired headset. Surprisingly, the microphone is of decent quality, and the buttons provide a satisfying click. In general, the design of the device is maximally simple and understandable, assembled with quality and without flaws.
The i1 is an official accessory, and when connected to a device, the user will immediately be prompted to install a companion app. Currently, this app can only update the firmware (although there are no updates yet), but according to Fiio, Apple is considering a more advanced version of the app that will allow customization of the i1. By the way, another limitation from Apple is that the device supports a maximum of 48kHz, but the developers are hoping to raise this limit to 192kHz through a firmware update that will enable high-resolution usage. The box is standard, with a black and red design and iconic artwork that pleases the eye. On the side, there is a traditional company sticker with a verification code. The packaging opens like a matchbox, and inside you will find the i1 itself, the instructions, and a clip for securing the device to clothing.
