Bowers & Wilkins has introduced a new generation of the popular 600 series speakers, leveraging three decades of experience in creating a reference standard for affordable, high-quality audio systems. This eighth generation of one of the most well-known Hi-Fi lines has received the most extensive update in the history of the 600 series.
The new tweeter with a titanium dome adds resolution and refinement to the sound. Bowers & Wilkins develops and manufactures all key components of their speaker systems and integrates innovative technologies over time. This approach is evident in the new 600 series S3 models, featuring numerous improvements in all aspects of their acoustic characteristics. Many of the new components are borrowed from the 700 series S3 and integrated into the redesigned and enhanced cabinet construction.
The most significant innovation in the 600 series S3 is the titanium dome tweeter technology. Its design consists of two parts, with an extremely thin, lightweight, yet rigid main dome 25 microns thick, reinforced by a 30-micron titanium ring. This dual dome is housed in a significantly lengthened loading tube system, inspired by the recently introduced 700 series S3.
A longer loading tube reduces the resonance frequency behind the dome and leads to a more open sound less affected by the speaker cabinet. Additionally, the new titanium dome is surrounded by a mounting plate, similar to the one on the 700 series S3 tweeter, to improve sound dispersion, and features a more open design for the tweeter grille borrowed from the recently introduced 800 Signature series. This combination of new technologies ensures that the tweeter delivers smoother and more refined sound without compromising resolution or detail.
Bowers & Wilkins' signature Continuum diaphragms are still present in the midrange and mid/woofer drivers of the new 600 series S3, with the addition of more powerful magnet systems from the 700 series S3 with low distortion levels. The low-frequency drivers with paper diaphragms in the 603 S3 floorstanding model are now also equipped with drivers from the 703 S3. The crossovers have been updated with high-quality, modernized bypass capacitors from the 700 series S3, providing higher resolution and transparency in sound.
The cabinets of the 600 series S3 speakers have also received significant improvements. The tweeter and main driver are now mounted closer to each other using intersecting bezels for improved integration and stereo imaging. The new terminal panel, borrowed from the 700 series S3, connects to a bass port from the 700 series on the rear panel, enhancing sound quality and increasing the cabinet's rigidity. Cabinet rigidity is further improved by upgrading the internal bracing with higher-quality wood. Finally, the lower part of the 606 S3 and 607 S3 now feature metal threaded inserts, allowing for a more secure attachment to the top plate of the new FS-600 S3 stands.
Developing all these key technologies in-house, Bowers & Wilkins has been able to offer a significant increase in sound quality across their new range, maintaining an excellent balance of price and quality.
